Hi
Friends and Family, As we sit on our peaceful deck, drinking clean
water and good coffee (ahhh!), I feel a need to express a little of what we
have experienced. Now, this possibly originates
as much in my need to process what we have seen as well as a responsibility to
promote to others about something very positive that is making a difference.
 Clean well
water!
India –
as many know is a place of colour, noise, rhythm, history and rich texture,
however, it is also a place of extreme poverty; a place where day to day life
is a challenge for many. |

The power of education: "One study after another has shown that educating girls is one of the most effective ways to fight poverty. Schooling is also often a precondition for girls and women to stand up against injustice, and for women to be integrated into the economy. Until women are numerate and literate, it is difficult for them to start businesses or contribute meaningfully to their national economies".( Half the Sky, Nicholas D Kristof & Sheryl Wudunn).
Empower 4 Life is commited to breaking the poverty cycle by assisting the next generation of children, particulary girls and women through our tuition centres. |

"There are about 77 million older persons currently in India. The elderly are extremely vulnerable to disease, accidents, neglect and ill health. In some cultures women are more dependent- financially and emotionally on families than men- making them more vulnerable to abuse. Elderly abuse is generally 'hidden'since olders persons find it shameful to admit that they are abused and are ashamed of the sigma. abuse of the elderly covers physical abuse, psychological or emotional abuse or neglect". |

Our Campaign is to build 4 wells, 4 medical camps and 4 small businesses around Vijayawada India. The wells will provide clean water for up to 500 people each well.
Without clean water disease is significantly increased amongst children, women and men.
The medical camps will provide general check ups for many poor people and provides much needed vaccines. Without this service many people can have sickness that go unchecked due to the costs of medical assistance. Small business helps families become self sustainable. |

'Social stratification is defined as a system by which a society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy',Macionis & Plummer (2002).Stratification exists in all societies, it is socially ordered rather than the reflection of an individual's capabilities, and it persists over generations, underpinned by a belief system which justifies the inequalities it produces(SCU, Social Inequality, 2008).
Research has found that children from socio-economically disadvantaged families begin life with'a poorer platform of health and a reduced capacity to benefit from economic and social advances experienced by the rest of society' |

Quote for the week "Microfinance recognizes that poor people are remarkable
reservoirs of energy and knowledge. And while the lack of financial services is
a sign of poverty, today it is also understood as an untapped opportunity to
create markets, bring people in from the margins and give them the tools with
which to help themselves." Kofi Annan
This statement is extremely accurate.I have realised how significant and lifechanging it is when an opportunity is given to ladies, such as sewing training. |

Empower 4 Life is well on the way to becoming a fully recognised chartity. Thanks to the supporters for your patience while it is getting established. We are hoping to get on line banking in the near future. There has been great feedback from India regarding the sewing centres and how sewing is changing individual futures. Check out the new profile page and testimony page. People are approaching our project managers in India regarding small business. They are assessed according to their circumstances and are then sent through to Empower 4 Life for sponsorship. |

I have found it disturbing when visiting developing countries the plight of the elderly. It is heartbreaking to see the elderly sorting through rubbish to earn a few rupees to survive. I often think, what would happen when they get older or they get sick? What do they do for food, the very thing we can take for granted. Even in our society there is always someone or somewhere you can get food assistance. Please look at this clip, It is quite informative about widows in India. |
